We love brewing beer

Two of the four ingredients needed for Beer

Malt and yeast are needed to brew beer. We get the sugars needed from the malt and the yeast does the job of turning those sugars into alcohol.  Water and hops are also needed when brewing beer.  Hops give the beer its bitterness and aroma depending on when they are added during the brewing proces.  Last but not least you need water. We are lucky living in Colorado Springs. The water out of the tap is good enough to brew with. Are you able to brew with your tap water or are you brewing with bottled water?

Happy End of Prohibition Anniversary

On this day in 1933 prohibition came to an end.  Cheers everyone!!!

“Colorado, the State of Craft Beer”

Colorado Beer Girl

COBG-101FinalColorExploratioin PMS

Normally I try not to simply re-post press releases in favor of putting them into my own words. This one, however, most likely cannot be adequately explained without all of the information in the press release. So please take a moment to read over this exciting news from the Colorado Brewers Guild about the creation of the logo and slogan, “Colorado, the State of Craft Beer.”

Colorado Brewers Guild Launches “Colorado, The State of Craft Beer”

Logo and design will be promoted at the Great American Beer Festival

DENVER – Sept. 23, 2014 – Today the Colorado Brewers Guild (CBG) released the logo and design to the general public for the “Colorado, The State Of Craft Beer” brand. This logo will be used on brochures, signage in breweries, liquor stores, glassware, festival tents and website.

“The State of Craft Beer will communicate the rich brewing heritage of Colorado internationally,” said…

Drinking beer is fun. Drinking local beer is even better. But the absolute best is drinking beer from several local breweries all under one roof for a great cause. The fourth annual Save the Ales Beer Tasting Event & Fundraiser takes place on Friday, September 5th at Exdo Event Center. Water is one of the main components of beer; without access to good clean water, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the amazing beers we’re so lucky to have here in Colorado. So please come out and support Conservation Colorado’s efforts to protect our state’s water, air and beer!

Some of the fantastic breweries that will be pouring at this event are:

Avery, Caution, Crazy Mountain, Diebolt, Eddyline, Epic, Fate, Former Future, Hall, Joyride, Living the Dream, Mountain Toad, Mu, New Belgium, Odell, Oskar Blues, River North, Trinity, Rock Bottom, Upslope, and Wynkoop.

Top 5 Resources We Use to Brew Beer

The internet is a wealth of information on brewing beer.  Over the years we have found these resources to be very useful in learning how to brew beer.

1.  BeerSmith – www.beersmith.com

The creator of BeerSmith has an awesome website with how to videos, recipes, a forum section, podcasts and most importantly the BeerSmith software.  The software allows you to build recipes, brew those recipes and keep notes on all of them.

2.  Clone Brews

Tess and Mark Szamatulski have put together recipes for 200 commercial beers.  We have not brewed one of these clone recipes yet, but have used many of them as inspiration for creating our own recipes.

3.  Twitter and #homebrewchat

Every Tuesday at 7pm MST @springsbrewcrew hosts #homebrewchat.  Questions are asked about home brewing and everyone learns from each other and shares best practices.

4.  American Homebrewers Association

The American Homebrewers Association is another great resource of information.  There website has everything from learning the basics, events that are coming up, competitions and a list of local home brewing clubs in your area.

5.  Blogs

Scour the internet for beer blogs.  There are to many to list here but there are plenty of them.  You will find blogs on brewers just starting up, advanced brewers and large corporate brewers.  The bloggers are blogging about there day to day activities and what they have learned.  Many of these bloggers are video bloggers as well and have excellent videos posted to their sites on things they have learned.

Well there you have it.  5 resources that we have used over the years to help us improve on our home brew.  We hope you found them helpful.

We would love to hear from you.  Comment below or give us a shout on Facebook or Twitter.

Weekly Update: A Chest Full of Fermentation

The Apartment Homebrewer

German LagersOn Sunday, the last of the Fall 2014 German lagers was finished brewing; at present, only fermentation and packaging are left. As seen in the picture, both the 2014 Summer Solstice Helles Bock and Oktoberfest fermentations have visibly slowed, while the Schwarzbier, brewed on Sunday, is at high krausen. To my knowledge, I’ve never seen a chocolate milk looking krausen, even among my stouts and porters. Hopefully, this is a good sign. Also seen in the picture, for the first time ever, I’ve completely filled my temperature-controlled chest freezer full of carboys. As pictured, the chest freezer is a GE-brand 7 cuft in design, and empirically demonstrates the ability to handle two six-gallon carboys and one three-gallon carboy. For those who enjoy TMI: the three-gallon carboy is seated on top of the compressor hump with a silicone bung used as the airlock. Lager fermentation should wrap up next week, then…
